Kuopio – the Capital of Gastronomy

Kuopio and the province of North Savo is the first region in Finland to receive the European Region of Gastronomy Award, and is being celebrated in 2020-2021.

European Region of Gastronomy status can be compared to the better known City of Culture title, the difference being that besides developing a broad range of culture, the Award promotes events, agriculture, training and entrepreneurship around the theme of gastronomy and food.

The European Region of Gastronomy Award emphasises responsibility, the use of locally produced food, local culture and collaboration between small and medium-sized enterprises.

Events and theme weeks inspired by nature’s rhythm

The year’s programme is centred on gastronomy and food and comprises events and activities that will tickle the taste buds of tourists and locals. The programme is based on existing events and festivals, complemented by activities suitable for both individuals and tourist groups.

The overriding theme of the year’s programme is foraging: picking berries and mushrooms, hunting and fishing. The programme’s themed weeks include berry- and mushroom-picking trips, picnics, cooking courses, workshops, pop-up restaurants, culinary tour packages and food festivals.

Pure nature and local food on a plate

The Kuopio region and North Savo has become a modern, diverse gastronomic region that respects traditions. The region’s numerous artisanal primary producers supply high-quality and distinctive raw materials that regional restaurants and food companies process into delicious taste experiences.

The surrounding countryside provides a natural resource with regard to both the way of life and environmental values. Although tourism and multiculturalism have for decades brought new tastes and colours to Finnish cuisine, regional ingredients still form the basis of food preparation. The pure food of North Savo and the experiences associated with it provide a good cross-section of what the region can offer tourists.
