Museum experiences for all ages

History, culture, nature, art and modernity go hand in hand in Capital of Lakeland. In Kuopio’s modern center, you can sneak around hundreds of years of urban life: in the dozens of historic homes of the Korttelimuseo – the Old Kuopio Museum – in the old pharmacy and in the yard. The handsome jugend building of the Kuopio Museum along the Snellman Park is in itself a piece of history. Its basic exhibitions display Eastern Finnish nature and cultural history. Each year the museum arranges various changing exhibitions. The most interesting thing in the museum for kids – and why not for adults too – is a large woolly mammoth. Kuopio Art Museum is an inspirational experience for modern and classical art lovers. Introducing exhibitions and thought-provoking themes,  the permanent and changing collections and presentations invite you to the world of art. Kuopio has also one the largest orthodox museum in the European countries, Riisa.

Tahko offers museum experiences in Aholansaari, an island near to the holiday village. In the summer, the island can be reached by boat  and in winter along the ice trail. On the island you can explore the history of the area at the Paavo Ruotsalainen’s smoke cottage museum. In the center of Nilsiä, about 10 kilometres from Tahko village, is the block museum, where you can see for example some photos and objects related to the history of the ski resort. Those who are interested in Tahko’s history should also buy the “Our Tahko” book, which tells about the colorful years of Tahko’s five decades.

An hour drive from Kuopio center, is a unique place, Riuttala peasant museo, where you can explore local agricultural history in countryside surrounded by old buildings. In the Iisalmi region, it’s worth to visit the Lapinlahti Art Museum Eemil ,the Rukajärvi Center or the Juhani Aho Museum in connection with the Hotel Iisalmi Seurahuone.
