Wife Carrying World Championships are taking place in Sonkajärvi, Finland on June 30 – July 1st. 2017. It will be the 22nd time people from all over the world come and carry their ladies in Sonkajärvi. The goal is to carry a woman through a 253.5 meters long challenging track as fast as possible. The carriers will not only need strength but also technique: there are two barriers and a water obstacle, about a meter deep, that have to be crossed.
There are going to be 48 pairs from fifteen countries in the World Championships – competitors from China, USA, Canada, UK, Australia, Russia, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Singapore, Estonia, Poland and Finland etc. Some Wife Carrying –pairs are going to participate serious-minded; some of them are going to just have fun.
Wife Carrying interests more and more people every year: Preliminary competitions have been held in Finland and elsewhere, for instance in USA and Germany. USA Champions 2017 are coming to compete in World Championships in Finland this summer.
The foreign media is very interested in this funny race: Japanese Television is making a documentary, filming crews and reporters are coming worldwide, and in October, a German producer, Mirka Uhrmacher from CE Community Editions GmbH, is publishing a book about world’s extraordinary sport competitions.
Last year’s Champions are Dmitri Sagal and Anastasia Loginova from Russia. Finnish pair Taisto Miettinen and Kristiina Haapanen got the second prize and Ville Parviainen and Janette Oksman were third. Let’s see who will get the golden medal this year.
